Mumbai BJP corporator Makarand Narwekar has written to Mayor Ritu Tawde seeking biometric attendance for corporators after a House defeat on April 30. Local reports say the party is also discussing attendance-linked discipline, funds and ticketing.

Mumbai BJP corporator Makarand Narwekar has written to Mayor Ritu Tawde seeking biometric attendance for corporators during Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation proceedings, according to local reporting on Thursday.

The push comes after a ruling-alliance proposal in the BMC House was defeated on April 30, when enough members were not present. The setback has triggered renewed attention inside the BJP on attendance and discipline among its corporators.

Loksatta reported earlier this week that BJP corporators in the BMC would be marked through biometric attendance at the party office. The Indian Express later reported that Narwekar's letter to the mayor asked for biometric attendance for corporators as a way to tighten discipline inside the civic body.

The reports said BJP leaders are also considering whether attendance records should influence the allocation of development funds and future ticket distribution.

The proposal appears to build on an older system in the corporation. Biometric attendance for corporators was approved years ago in BMC proceedings, but the current reporting suggests the BJP is now pressing for stricter use of attendance tracking after the latest House setback.

It is not yet clear whether the mayor or the BMC will formally accept the proposal, or whether the system would also be extended to committee meetings. For now, the move signals an effort by the BJP to impose tighter internal discipline after a rare defeat in the House.
