Anthropic blocks Claude subscriptions from third-party harnesses like OpenClaw

Anthropic has started blocking Claude Pro and Max subscriptions from being used through third-party harnesses such as OpenClaw, according to TechCrunch and other reports.

The change went into effect at noon Pacific on April 4, the reports said. Users who had been routing Claude through outside agent frameworks will no longer be able to count that traffic against a flat subscription plan and will need separate billing instead.

The move appears aimed at separating first-party Claude usage from agent-style workflows that Anthropic says were not what the consumer subscriptions were designed for. Reporting on the change said the company is tightening control over how subscription access is used, especially when it is funneled through third-party tools.

Anthropic's help pages still show that Claude Code and Claude.ai remain part of the company's own subscription and usage setup. That means the restriction is specific to third-party harnesses, not all Claude subscriptions.

The update matters most for power users and builders who used subscription access to run Claude through external wrappers or orchestration tools. Those users will now face a higher-friction billing path, with API or extra-usage charges replacing flat-rate subscription access for those workflows.

The company has not publicly spelled out whether the policy will broaden further or whether any migration support will be offered to affected users.
