Eight bodies have been recovered after a canoe capsized on River Nguse in western Uganda, while search-and-rescue teams continue to look for missing passengers.

The canoe capsized on April 29 in Kagadi District. Reuters reported that it was carrying an estimated 35 to 40 passengers, and police initially said one survivor had been identified while the exact number of people missing was unclear because there was no passenger manifest.

Earlier coverage had said dozens were feared dead. Later reporting from Xinhua said eight bodies had been recovered from the river as rescue efforts continued.

Police have cited possible overloading, night travel and the condition of the vessel as possible contributing factors.

The final death toll has not yet been confirmed, and the number of passengers still missing remains unclear.

Authorities are still searching the river as they try to account for everyone believed to have been on board.
