Greater Manchester Police said the body of a 15-year-old boy was recovered from Cowbury Reservoir in Stalybridge after he got into difficulty while swimming during the UK heatwave.

Officers said they were called at about 6.30pm on Saturday, June 27, to reports of a boy in difficulty in the water near the reservoir. A body was recovered later that evening.

Police said the boy’s family has been informed and that there are no suspicious circumstances.

Heatwave warning

The incident came as parts of the UK faced a spell of extreme heat and fresh warnings about the dangers of cooling off in open water.

Authorities have repeatedly urged people not to jump into or swim in reservoirs, rivers, canals and ponds during hot weather. Inland waters can remain cold and hazardous even when air temperatures are high.

The Guardian reported that the death was one of at least seven water-related fatalities during the June 2026 heatwave.

What happens next

Police may release further details, including identification information, if needed. Local authorities and safety officials are also expected to continue warning people about the risks of open-water swimming while the heatwave lasts.
