Pilgrims are returning to Djerba's Ghriba synagogue under heavy security as Tunisia hosts the annual pilgrimage with a cautious recovery in attendance.

Pilgrims are returning to Tunisia's Djerba synagogue for the annual Ghriba pilgrimage, with attendance rebounding cautiously under heavy security.

Organizers said the 2026 pilgrimage runs from April 30 to May 6 and is open to visitors from Tunisia and abroad. TAP reported that preparations at the synagogue included painting, cleaning and work around the surrounding area.

Africanews and AP reported that about 200 pilgrims have arrived from abroad. They said Tunisian authorities have put exceptional security measures in place at the airport, around the island and at the synagogue itself.

The atmosphere remains subdued this year. Coverage says the festivities are largely limited to religious rites inside the synagogue, reflecting the caution that still surrounds the event after the 2023 attack.

The pilgrimage's gradual return is being watched closely as a sign of whether the shrine can continue drawing visitors while security remains tight and organizers try to restore confidence.
