Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah thanked the Union government on Saturday after a proposed closure of Srinagar airport’s runway was suspended, relieving immediate pressure on air connectivity, passengers and tourism. Earlier plans had pointed to maintenance-related disruptions later this year, and Abdullah had already urged an alternative using Awantipora airbase.
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Saturday thanked the Union government after the proposed closure of Srinagar airport’s runway was suspended, a move that eases immediate concerns over air connectivity, passenger disruption and tourism.
The development comes after weeks of uncertainty around maintenance work at the airport, which is a critical air link for the valley and one of the region’s key transport lifelines.
Earlier closure plan
Earlier reporting had said Srinagar airport was expected to undergo runway maintenance in 2026, with disruptions likely through July to September and a full closure proposed for the first half of October.
That prospect raised concern among passengers, airlines and the local tourism sector, which relies heavily on air travel for access to Jammu and Kashmir.
Abdullah’s push for alternatives
On June 13, Abdullah met Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu and proposed using Awantipora airbase as a civilian flight alternative during the closure period.
He had also warned that a shutdown would affect connectivity and create losses for tourism and related businesses.
What remains unclear
The latest reports indicate the proposed closure has been suspended, but it is not yet clear whether the decision is a temporary deferment or an indefinite cancellation.
It is also unclear whether the airport operator will issue a revised maintenance schedule or whether the Awantipora contingency plan will still be pursued.
Travellers planning trips to Kashmir will still be watching for updated airline advisories and any new notice from the Airports Authority of India or the aviation ministry.
