The Cubs placed Ben Brown on the 15-day injured list with a neck strain, retroactive to June 21, while making several other pitching moves during a same-day roster shuffle.

The Cubs placed right-hander Ben Brown on the 15-day injured list Tuesday with a neck strain, retroactive to June 21, as Chicago made a series of pitching moves around its doubleheader schedule and a stretch of games that has already thinned the staff.

The roster shuffle also included the selection of Vince Velasquez, the recall of Gavin Hollowell, the placement of Edward Cabrera on the injured list with a left hamstring strain, the designation of Eduarniel Nunez for assignment and the addition of Tyler Ferguson as the 27th man for the doubleheader against the Mets.

Brown heads to the IL

Brown had been part of the Cubs’ rotation before the move. With the IL stint backdated to June 21, he will miss at least 15 days and leaves Chicago with another immediate opening to cover in the rotation.

The team did not announce a replacement starter in the move itself, but Velasquez’s contract selection gives the Cubs another major-league arm available to help absorb innings.

A crowded pitching day

The Brown move did not happen in isolation. The Cubs were already managing the demands of a doubleheader, and the roster activity reflected the need to add live arms quickly.

Cabrera’s status added to the pressure after he left the Mets game with a left hamstring/adductor injury, and manager Craig Counsell indicated he would go on the injured list. That left Chicago navigating multiple pitching absences at once.

What comes next

The key question now is who takes Brown’s next turn in the rotation and whether the Cubs need another move before the Brewers series.

For now, Chicago’s pitching depth is being tested by the combination of Brown’s neck strain, Cabrera’s injury and the roster churn required to get through a busy stretch.
