Extreme heat forced a temporary closure of the Great American State Fair on the National Mall on July 3, with organizers saying it would reopen at 5 p.m. and that July 4 programming would continue with added safety measures.
The Great American State Fair on the National Mall closed temporarily on July 3 as dangerous heat and humidity pushed organizers to clear the grounds and protect attendees.
Freedom 250 said the shutdown was driven by safety concerns for guests, volunteers, performers, vendors and staff. Coverage said fairgoers were told shortly after 1 p.m. ET to leave the grounds, with organizers planning to reopen at 5 p.m.
The closure came as Washington faced a heat wave with heat index values cited as high as 115°F in reporting, and the National Weather Service warning of hazardous conditions in the area.
Holiday schedule remains in place
Despite the temporary closure, organizers said the broader July 4 program on and around the National Mall was still moving forward, including the annual A Capitol Fourth concert.
That concert was still scheduled for 8 p.m., with gates opening at 7 p.m. Coverage also said Freedom 250 planned holiday events on the Mall later in the day, including a speech by President Donald Trump at 9:45 p.m. and fireworks later that night.
To reduce the risk from the heat, organizers had already added water stations and ice, and later coverage said cooling resources and medical support were being expanded.
What to watch next
The main open question was whether the fair would reopen at 5 p.m. as planned and whether the weather would force further changes later in the day.
For now, organizers appeared intent on keeping the holiday programming intact while limiting exposure during the hottest part of the afternoon.
