NBCLA’s post-debate poll found most viewers said the LA mayoral and California governor debates did not change their minds, though some said they did.
NBC Los Angeles asked viewers whether the May 6 Los Angeles mayoral and California gubernatorial debates changed their minds.
In NBCLA's post-debate viewer reaction piece, most respondents in both polls said no. A smaller share said the debates did change their minds, while a minority remained undecided.
The debates were hosted by NBC4 and Telemundo 52 at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles. The mayoral debate featured Karen Bass, Spencer Pratt and Nithya Raman, while the gubernatorial debate included Xavier Becerra, Chad Bianco, Steve Hilton, Matt Mahan, Katie Porter, Tom Steyer and Antonio Villaraigosa.
The viewer reaction story came the same evening as the debates, giving an early read on how NBC Los Angeles' audience responded. It was not a scientific survey, but it does show that many viewers left the debates unmoved.
Independent coverage the next day underscored the contention of the governor's debate, while the mayor's race also drew sharp reactions. But NBCLA's own poll suggests that, at least among its audience, the debates did not produce a sweeping late-breaking shift.
That matters because both races are headed toward the June 2 primary, where even small changes in turnout and persuasion could affect the outcome.
