ESPN ranks UNC basketball 8th in transfer portal rankings

ESPN has North Carolina at No. 8 in its 2026 transfer portal rankings, a national snapshot of how well Michael Malone’s first offseason roster rebuild in Chapel Hill is being received.

The ranking, reported publicly on June 10, also placed UNC one spot ahead of Duke. It is an early indicator that the Tar Heels’ portal work has drawn attention beyond the ACC and that the roster is viewed as one of the stronger reshapes in the country.

How UNC got here

UNC hired Malone on April 7 and quickly moved into roster construction. The Tar Heels have added Matt Able, Neoklis Avdalas and Terrence Brown through the portal, while also bringing in international additions Sayon Keita and Alexandros Samodurov. Freshman Maximo Adams is also part of the incoming group.

That mix helped push North Carolina into ESPN’s top 10. Tar Heel Blog reported that ESPN’s list still leaves UNC with one roster spot to fill, so the rebuild is not finished yet.

What it means

Portal rankings are media evaluations, not official team or NCAA assessments, but they provide a quick read on how a roster is being viewed nationally. For UNC, the No. 8 placement suggests Malone’s first team is already being treated as a contender in the offseason conversation.

The remaining open spot gives North Carolina another chance to add before the roster is finalized. The question now is whether the Tar Heels make another transfer addition or turn to another route to complete the build.
