An explosion at a fireworks factory in Liuyang, Hunan, has killed 26 people and injured 61, according to Chinese state media and local officials.
The blast hit the Huasheng Fireworks Manufacturing and Display Co. plant on May 4. State media said rescue work was ordered immediately, and Chinese President Xi Jinping called for a prompt investigation and accountability.
Local authorities later said search and rescue operations were basically complete, while air and water monitoring remained normal. They also said control measures were taken against those responsible for the company.
Early reports had put the death toll lower before officials updated the figures. The latest numbers make this one of the deadliest industrial accidents reported in China this year.
The cause of the explosion has not yet been publicly explained, and officials have not said whether criminal charges will follow.
