Secret Service officers shot a man after gunfire was reported near a White House security checkpoint on Saturday evening, according to multiple news outlets and officials.

The Secret Service said it was responding to reports of shots fired near 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW, close to the White House. Reuters reported the agency said it was working to corroborate the reports with personnel on the ground.

Reporters near the White House said they heard what sounded like multiple gunshots and were told to seek shelter. AP and other outlets later reported that a man opened fire near the checkpoint and was shot by Secret Service officers.

CBS and AP later reported that the suspect died. AP also reported on Sunday that a bystander was in serious condition after the shooting.

Officials have not yet fully identified the suspect or explained the motive. It was also not immediately clear whether the bystander was struck by the suspect’s gunfire or by return fire.

The incident unfolded on one of the busiest public-security sites in the country and prompted a rapid response from federal law enforcement near the presidential residence.
