Fiji Meteorological and Hydrological Services says a heavy rain alert remains in force for the entire Fiji group, with isolated heavy falls expected and the risk of flash flooding in low-lying and flood-prone areas.
The official bulletin, issued on May 23 and updated on May 24, says rainfall is expected to become more frequent and increase as the wet weather pattern continues. It also warns that surface flooding could affect roads, while saturated ground may increase the chance of landslides.
Local reporting on May 24 said the alert covers the whole country and that the worsening weather could affect infrastructure repair work. The reports also highlighted reduced visibility on wet roads and rising water levels in some areas.
The weather office has not indicated that the alert has been lifted. The next updates will depend on how the rainfall develops through Sunday, Monday and into Tuesday.
Residents in low-lying, flood-prone and landslide-prone areas should continue to monitor official weather advisories and remain alert to changing conditions.
