A high-water rescue closed all westbound lanes of Loop 410 near Jackson Keller Road in San Antonio early Monday as heavy rain, flash flooding and multiple road closures disrupted the morning commute.

Westbound Loop 410 in San Antonio was shut down early Monday after a high-water rescue near Jackson Keller Road, part of a morning of heavy rain, flooding and road closures across the city.

TxDOT said the closure began at 6:15 a.m. and affected all four westbound lanes near Vance Jackson Road. Local police and transportation officials said the shutdown followed a high-water rescue as stormwater covered the roadway.

Storms disrupt the commute

The National Weather Service had a flash flood warning in effect for parts of the region, along with a broader flood watch through Tuesday evening. MySA reported that several roads in San Antonio and Bandera were already closed because of dangerously high water.

Express-News reported that about 40 roads, mostly on the North Side, were closed because of flooding. The outlets also said San Antonio International Airport measured 2.54 inches of rain early Monday, setting a new June 15 record and breaking the previous mark of 1.68 inches from 1894.

More flooding possible

MySA said 4 to 7 inches of rain had already fallen in some places, with up to 1 inch more possible. The broader storm system was affecting South and Central Texas, including Bexar County and neighboring areas under flood warnings.

Officials were also directing motorists to avoid flooded roadways and check live water-crossing updates as the rain continued.

The main questions now are how long the Loop 410 closure will last, whether more water rescues are reported and whether additional roads close as the storm persists.
