The alert, published on May 18, 2026, named The Bank of East Asia, Shanghai Commercial Bank, Chong Hing Bank, Bank Julius Baer and EFG Bank.
According to the HKMA, the scam tactics include fraudulent websites and fake login pages designed to capture customer credentials. The regulator also warned that phishing emails and instant messages may be used to lure people into revealing sensitive information.
The HKMA reminded the public that banks will not send SMS or email messages with embedded hyperlinks to conduct transactions. It also said banks will not ask for login passwords or one-time passwords by phone, email or SMS.
The alert is the latest in a series of bank-related scam warnings in Hong Kong, with officials and banks continuing to caution customers to verify messages and avoid entering credentials through links received by message or email.
The Hong Kong government also reposted the warning in its press-release system on the same day.
