Kansas City’s 0.7-mile Riverfront Extension opened for passenger service on May 18, linking the downtown streetcar line to Berkley Riverfront.

Kansas City’s Riverfront Extension opened for passenger service on Monday, May 18, extending the KC Streetcar from downtown to Berkley Riverfront.

City and streetcar officials said the 0.7-mile project opened after a press conference and community celebration at 11 a.m. on the riverfront. The extension is part of a $62 million buildout intended to connect the existing streetcar line from the River Market area to the riverfront.

The opening gives riders a new transit link to Berkley Riverfront and completes a project that had been in the works for years. KC Streetcar and the City of Kansas City both had previously announced the May 18 launch date.

Local outlets reported first-day service on the new segment, which marks another expansion of Kansas City’s streetcar network.
