Madison has launched a School Street pilot near Marquette Elementary, closing a stretch of Jenifer Street during school arrival and dismissal windows through June 10.
The city says the trial covers Jenifer Street between Thornton Avenue and Rogers Street. During the closure windows, drivers are blocked by cones and signage, while non-student pedestrians and bicyclists may still pass through.
City officials describe the project as part of a broader Safe Streets for All and Safe Routes to School effort with Madison Metropolitan School District and the Wisconsin Bike Fed.
The city says the pilot will be evaluated for safety perceptions, walking and biking counts, and traffic impacts. The School Street effort is intended to test whether limiting car traffic near the school can make travel safer and more comfortable for students who walk or bike.
The pilot began on Monday, May 18, 2026, and is scheduled to end on Wednesday, June 10, 2026.
What comes next
The city has not yet said whether the Marquette Elementary pilot will be extended or expanded after June 10. Any next step will likely depend on the results of the planned evaluation.
