Marco Trungelliti beat Luciano Darderi in Marrakech to become the oldest first-time tour-level finalist in Open Era history, according to ATP Tour reporting.
Marco Trungelliti made tennis history in Marrakech on Saturday, beating Luciano Darderi 6-4, 7-6(2) to reach his first ATP Tour final.
At 36 years old, the Argentine became the oldest first-time tour-level finalist in Open Era history, according to ATP Tour reporting. The match lasted two hours and 10 minutes and capped a long qualifying run for Trungelliti.
The ATP said the previous Open Era record belonged to Victor Estrella Burgos, who reached his first tour-level final at 34 years and 190 days.
The result also continued a breakthrough week for Trungelliti, who was already projected to enter the Top 100 for the first time after his Marrakech run.
ANSA independently corroborated the semifinal result and the age record. Trungelliti was set to face Rafael Jodar in the final.
The run gives the veteran Argentine a milestone title opportunity after years on the circuit without a tour-level final.
