New York City has named The Peninsula in Hunts Point, Bronx, as the second site in its municipal grocery store program, expanding a food policy initiative aimed at lower-cost shopping options in underserved neighborhoods.
Officials announced the site on May 18, 2026. The planned store will take up about 20,000 square feet and is expected to open in 2027, according to the city.
The Peninsula is a mixed-use redevelopment at the former Spofford Juvenile Detention Facility site in the South Bronx. City officials said a request for proposals for an operator is expected this summer.
The Hunts Point location follows the city’s earlier announcement of La Marqueta in East Harlem as the first identified site in the program. The administration has said it plans to open one grocery store in each borough by the end of the mayor’s first term.
The program is being framed by city officials as part of a broader effort to improve neighborhood affordability and food access. The next major step is the selection of an operator and the progress of the development toward a 2027 opening.
