Gov. Tim Walz visited Two Harbors on Monday to survey wildfire damage after the Stewart Trail Fire burned hundreds of acres and destroyed structures in northern Minnesota.
Gov. Tim Walz traveled to the Two Harbors area on Monday to survey damage from the Stewart Trail Fire as crews continued working to contain the blaze in northern Minnesota.
State officials said the fire had burned about 355 acres and was 62% contained in Monday coverage. Reports said at least 34 structures had been lost in the fire area so far.
The governor's visit came one day after he declared a peacetime emergency and mobilized the Minnesota National Guard to support wildfire response efforts.
MPR News reported that Walz met with fire responders at the Two Harbors fire department incident command center as crews gained ground on the North Shore fire. CBS Minnesota and FOX 9 also reported that he toured the area to see the damage firsthand.
The wildfire prompted evacuations and drew help from state responders as officials assessed losses and continued suppression work.
What happens next
Officials have not said whether additional state or federal aid will be announced, and the latest damage totals and containment levels could change as crews continue working the fire.
