Eversource reported 2,049 outages by 7:15 p.m. Thursday. United Illuminating reported 20 outages at the same time.

Hardest-hit towns

CT Insider said the biggest outage pockets were in Salem, Meriden, New Milford and Westport. The later update listed 375 outages in Salem, 279 in Meriden, 224 in New Milford and 234 in Westport.

The utility and weather reports pointed to tree limbs as a major cause of the outages, with crews assessing damage as the storms continued.

A tornado watch covered parts of northern Connecticut until 7 p.m. Thursday. Weather coverage from CT Insider said the state faced a slight risk for severe thunderstorms, with damaging wind gusts and isolated tornadoes possible.
