Ugandan reports say NUP deputy spokesperson Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro was denied bail while on remand. Separate coverage says he asked for temporary release to attend his wife’s burial after her death on April 9.
Ugandan reports say National Unity Platform deputy spokesperson Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro has been denied bail while he remains on remand.
The case has also taken on a humanitarian dimension after separate reports said he wrote to the Chief Justice seeking temporary release so he could attend and bury his wife, Edith Katende Mufumbiro, who died on April 9, 2026.
Earlier coverage from Monitor, NTV Uganda, Uganda Radio Network and ChimpReports said Mufumbiro had already been held in custody in related cases involving allegations such as incitement and unlawful drilling. Those reports also said prosecutors and courts had raised concerns about possible interference and ongoing investigations.
Monitor quoted a prisons spokesperson as saying prison authorities do not have a legal basis to release a remand prisoner to bury a relative.
The latest reports did not resolve whether the burial request was granted.
