Authorities in Nigeria's Oyo state say gunmen abducted at least 39 pupils and seven teachers from schools in Oriire district, and one abducted teacher was later killed in captivity.

The attack took place on Friday, May 15, 2026, in Ahoro Esinele community. Officials initially said the number of pupils taken was still being assessed, but later reporting confirmed that at least 39 pupils were among those seized.

The Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board said a teacher was killed and pupils were kidnapped in the attack. Governor Seyi Makinde later confirmed that seven teachers were abducted. Federal officials have also said the government is working to rescue the victims.

Security operatives are carrying out a rescue operation and tracking the attackers. Police and other agencies have been searching for the gunmen since the assault.

The exact fate of the abducted pupils and teachers has not been disclosed. Officials have not yet said whether any of the victims have been rescued.
