Philadelphia canceled its Wawa Welcome America Salute to Independence Semiquincentennial Parade on Friday after earlier adjustments failed to make the July 4 event safe during an extreme heat wave. Other holiday festivities remained scheduled, including the indoor Liberty Medal ceremony and the evening concert and fireworks.
Philadelphia canceled its Wawa Welcome America Salute to Independence Semiquincentennial Parade after organizers concluded that dangerous heat made the event unsafe for participants and spectators.
The parade was scheduled for July 4 as part of Philadelphia’s 250th-anniversary Independence Day celebrations. Officials had already tried to adjust the event by shortening the route and moving the start time earlier, but those changes were not enough to keep the parade on the schedule.
Heat forces a late change
The cancellation came as Philadelphia and much of the eastern U.S. faced a stretch of extreme heat heading into the holiday weekend. AP reported that temperatures in Philadelphia had already reached 100 degrees earlier in the week and that dangerous heat was expected to continue through the holiday.
AP also reported that the city had already shortened a Thursday morning parade, canceled an afternoon block party and pushed back the start times of other evening events because of the weather.
What stays on the schedule
Other major July 4 events in Philadelphia were still expected to go ahead. People reported that the Liberty Medal ceremony remained scheduled indoors, while the July 4 concert and fireworks on Benjamin Franklin Parkway were still planned.
The parade was expected to include more than 50 marching bands, 19 themed floats, military units and all 52 Miss America state and territory titleholders.
Philadelphia’s holiday weekend has been shaped by the heat for days. Axios reported that city leaders and transit planners were already adjusting around the weather as the region braced for temperatures in the low 100s and heat index values above 105.
Organizers and city officials have not indicated that the parade will be rescheduled. For now, the cancellation is the latest sign that extreme heat is disrupting one of Philadelphia’s marquee July 4 events.
