Plainview and nearby South Plains counties are heading into Juneteenth weekend with hot, mostly dry weather expected to hold through Sunday before a late cold front may bring showers, thunderstorms and cooler temperatures early next week.

Weekend forecast

National Weather Service meteorologist Adam Przepiora said Saturday should bring clear skies, southerly winds and afternoon highs in the mid-90s.

By Sunday, Plainview could reach about 101 degrees as winds shift and an upper ridge builds overhead. The forecast also calls for similar conditions across Hale County and nearby counties including Floyd, Lamb, Swisher, Bailey, Briscoe and Castro.

Relief may arrive late

A cold front may move through late Sunday night into Monday, creating a chance for showers and thunderstorms. If that front arrives on schedule, temperatures could fall into the low 90s by Monday afternoon, about 10 degrees cooler than Sunday.

The timing and strength of any rain or storm activity remain uncertain.

Juneteenth plans

The forecast lands as Plainview prepares for its 45th Juneteenth celebration, which begins Friday. A separate local report said Saturday’s parade and park events are part of the holiday schedule.

That makes the weekend forecast especially important for people planning to attend outdoor events. Heat can affect comfort, attendance and basic safety, particularly during afternoon activities.

Residents heading outdoors should watch for updated weather guidance through the weekend, and organizers may need to adjust plans if heat or storm chances increase.
