AES has withdrawn its proposed Seguro battery storage project near Escondido, ending a long-running and controversial plan in North County.

Local reporting said AES filed a formal request to withdraw the application with San Diego County on April 2, and later said it was no longer moving forward with the project because of challenging market conditions.

The proposed 400 MW battery storage facility, known as the Seguro Energy Storage project, had been planned for unincorporated San Diego County near the SDG&E Escondido Substation and the communities of Eden Valley, Harmony Grove and Elfin Forest.

The proposal had faced years of neighborhood opposition and scrutiny over fire safety and siting. County records show the project had been moving through the CEQA and major use permit process before the withdrawal.

NBC 7 San Diego and Times of San Diego both reported the change, marking the end of the project as filed. It is not yet clear whether San Diego County has formally updated the project file.

For now, the withdrawal removes one of the region’s most closely watched battery storage proposals from the active docket.
