Romania's pro-European government has fallen after parliament passed a no-confidence motion against Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan.
Romania's government has collapsed after parliament passed a no-confidence motion against Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan.
Lawmakers voted 281 to 4 in favor of the motion, comfortably clearing the 233 votes needed to bring down the pro-European coalition. The vote took place during a joint session of parliament on May 5, 2026.
The government had been in office for about 10 months. Reporting says Bolojan is expected to remain as caretaker prime minister until a new cabinet is approved.
The collapse sets off a new round of coalition negotiations in Bucharest and raises fresh questions about fiscal policy and Romania's ability to keep key political commitments on track. The Senate had listed the motion for debate and a vote in its official agenda for Tuesday.
The next step will be consultations on who President Nicușor Dan will nominate to lead the next government.
