Russian strikes killed at least 22 people across Ukraine, with Ukrainian officials confirming major casualties in Zaporizhzhia and other regions.
Russian attacks on Ukraine killed at least 22 people on May 5, according to Reuters and AP, as Kyiv’s proposed ceasefire deadline approached.
Ukrainian officials said 12 people were killed in Zaporizhzhia. Officials and President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also said strikes killed people in Dnipro, Poltava and Kramatorsk, and AP reported more than 80 injuries from the same wave of attacks.
The attacks were part of a broader barrage of drones and missiles that Ukrainian authorities said hit multiple locations. Zelenskyy condemned the strikes as deliberate attacks on civilians.
The casualty count was still likely to change as rescue and recovery work continued. Later coverage from other outlets suggested the toll could rise, but Reuters and AP both supported a minimum count of 22 deaths at the time of publication.
The strikes came just before Russia’s announced May 8-9 pause and amid renewed pressure over whether any ceasefire effort could hold.
