Schools were closed on July 9 in parts of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Kerala and Karnataka after heavy monsoon rain prompted local authorities to order precautionary holidays.

The closures were tied to waterlogging, landslide risk and district-level weather alerts, disrupting classes for students and travel for families and school staff across multiple states.

Uttar Pradesh

In Uttar Pradesh, schools in Ghaziabad were closed up to Class 12 because of heavy rain. In Mathura and Hathras, classes were suspended up to Class 8, according to the reports.

An Economic Times report also said the India Meteorological Department had issued an alert across the state as rainfall intensified.

Uttarakhand

In Uttarakhand, all government and private educational institutions were closed in Dehradun, Udham Singh Nagar and Nainital, including anganwadi centres.

A Navbharat Times report said the IMD had issued heavy-rain alerts for seven districts, including Dehradun and Nainital, and authorities moved the districts into alert mode as a precaution.

Kerala and Karnataka

In Kerala, schools and colleges were closed in Wayanad, Kozhikode and Malappuram.

In Karnataka, the holiday continued in Hosanagar and Sagar taluks of Shivamogga district after earlier heavy rain disruptions.

The weather-related orders reflect the broader monsoon risk facing hill and rain-hit districts, where flooding, waterlogging and landslides can make it unsafe for students to commute.

What to watch

The key question is whether the closures will be extended beyond July 9 if rain continues. Further district orders are also possible if IMD alerts are updated or rainfall intensifies.
