Pittsburgh and surrounding counties face a renewed severe-weather threat today, with damaging winds, hail and a low tornado risk possible.

Pittsburgh and surrounding counties are facing another round of severe weather today, with forecasters warning that damaging winds are the main threat.

The National Weather Service in Pittsburgh said isolated to scattered severe storms are possible late today and tonight. Its hazardous weather outlook says the primary concern is damaging wind gusts, with a lesser risk of large hail and a tornado mainly north of Pittsburgh.

Local forecasts are in line with the federal outlook. CBS Pittsburgh said severe storm chances peak this afternoon into the evening, while WTAE said the severe-weather outlook has been upgraded and that strong winds and large hail are possible. WPXI also said hail and an isolated tornado cannot be ruled out.

The immediate question is whether storms organize into a stronger line later today or remain more isolated. Forecasters have not ruled out additional watches or warnings as the day goes on.

For now, the region is being told to stay weather-aware, especially through the afternoon and evening hours.
