Storms across the New York City area on Saturday brought damaging winds, hail, downpours, downed trees and outages, turning an earlier severe-weather forecast into a confirmed impact story.

Storms swept across the New York City area on Saturday, bringing damaging winds, hail and heavy rain and confirming the severe-weather threat that officials had warned about earlier in the weekend.

CBS New York reported wind gusts in excess of 60 mph across the region, more than 250 reports of downed trees to the New York City Parks Department by 10 p.m. Saturday, quarter-sized hail in Sullivan County and power outages across the Tri-State area.

The National Weather Service had a Severe Thunderstorm Watch in effect for most of the NYC area on Saturday, with damaging winds and isolated large hail among the main threats. In its area forecast discussion, the agency said storms could produce wind gusts above 70 mph mainly west of New York City.

New York City Emergency Management had issued a travel advisory on Friday for severe thunderstorms expected from Saturday into Sunday, warning of heavy rain and gusty winds.

The latest reports move the story from forecast risk to confirmed impacts. Open questions remain about whether additional damage, outages or transit disruptions are reported overnight, and whether any injuries are confirmed in later coverage.
