The Pirates have called up Konnor Griffin for his MLB debut while reports say the sides are closing in on a nine-year, $140 million extension.

The Pirates are calling up top prospect Konnor Griffin for his MLB debut, and reports say the club is also closing in on a major long-term extension.

On Thursday, ESPN reported that Pittsburgh and Griffin were working to finalize a nine-year, $140 million deal. That is a step up from earlier reporting by MLB.com, which said the sides had discussed a possible long-term extension centered on as long as nine years and more than $100 million.

The promotion makes the contract talks more immediate. Griffin is MLB Pipeline’s No. 1 overall prospect and was drafted ninth overall by Pittsburgh in 2024.

The move does not mean a deal has been formally announced. No finalized contract was found in the sources reviewed, and it remains unclear whether the extension will be completed before Griffin takes the field.

What is clear is that the Pirates are bringing Griffin to the majors while discussions continue around what could be one of the largest early-career contracts for a young player in recent memory.
