Southwest Airlines said it will offer special fares and a status match to help Spirit customers after Spirit Airlines began an immediate wind-down of operations.

Southwest Airlines said it is prepared to help travelers affected by Spirit Airlines’ sudden shutdown by offering special fares and a status match.

In a statement on May 2, Southwest said Spirit customers can book special fares at airport ticket counters on eligible overlapping routes through May 6, 2026. The airline also said Spirit Silver and Gold customers can receive A-List status-match benefits.

The move comes after Spirit Airlines announced an immediate orderly wind-down of operations and canceled all flights. Spirit said customers should not go to the airport and that the company had no additional funding available.

Southwest’s offer is another sign of how quickly rival airlines are trying to absorb displaced travelers after Spirit’s collapse. Frontier Airlines separately announced discounted rescue fares and added capacity in former Spirit markets.

For passengers, the immediate issue is rebooking. Southwest’s offer gives Spirit customers another option, but only on routes where the two airlines overlap and only for a limited time.

It is not yet clear how many Spirit customers will use the Southwest offer or whether more airlines will add similar deals.
