The Maharashtra government and oil companies have said petrol, diesel and LPG stocks remain adequate across the state, even as some outlets reported queues and temporary supply strain amid panic buying.
The Maharashtra government and oil companies have said there is no statewide fuel shortage, after reports of panic buying and temporary strain at some petrol pumps in parts of the state.
In an official statement posted by PIB Mumbai on Monday, May 18, the state said adequate stocks of petrol, diesel and LPG are available across Maharashtra. The release said PSU oil companies are monitoring pump-level supplies and replenishing stocks as needed.
The statement came after local media reports on Sunday, May 17, described supply constraints at some fuel outlets in Pune and a clash at a petrol pump in Washim amid crowds gathered over shortage fears.
According to the PIB release, diesel demand in Maharashtra rose 19.66% and petrol demand rose 20.39% in the first fortnight of May 2026. It said around 267 TKL of petrol and 502 TKL of diesel were supplied in the state during that period, while PSU oil companies had about 32,995 metric tonnes of LPG stock available.
Officials said the situation is being reviewed with oil companies and district authorities. The public statement also urged people not to panic buy.
The latest assurances indicate that the pressure on some outlets appears to be localized rather than a statewide supply failure, although reports of queueing and short-term shortages at individual pumps continue to shape public concern.
What happened
Local reports over the weekend described fuel queues, temporary rationing at some pumps and fears of shortages in parts of Maharashtra. That triggered panic buying in some areas.
Official response
By Monday, the state government and oil companies said stocks were adequate and replenishment was under way. The message was aimed at calming consumers and preventing further panic buying.
