Severe thunderstorms and hail hit parts of Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh on June 11, overturning trucks in Ambala and disrupting traffic and electricity. IMD warnings remained active on June 12, with more rain and strong winds expected.
Severe thunderstorms, hail and gusty winds swept across parts of Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh on June 11, damaging trees, electricity poles and transport links as the India Meteorological Department kept warnings in place into June 12.
In the sharpest reported incident, three parked trucks were overturned on National Highway-152D in Ambala district, Haryana. No injuries were reported. The weather also disrupted traffic and power supply in several places across the three states.
Storms spread across the region
Local reports said the storm belt brought wind speeds of up to 90 kmph in some areas. Punjab saw gusts of up to 68 kmph in Mohali, along with hail in several towns. In Himachal Pradesh, rain and thundershowers were reported in districts including Kangra, Chamba, Kullu and Mandi, with hail also reported in parts of Kullu.
Trees and electricity poles were uprooted at multiple locations, adding to short-term disruption for commuters and residents. The storms also offered temporary relief from the heatwave conditions affecting northwestern India.
IMD warnings continue
The weather system remained active on June 12. Reports cited IMD thunderstorm and strong-wind warnings for Delhi-NCR and nearby states, including Haryana and Punjab, while Himachal Pradesh was expected to stay wet through June 17.
The immediate concern is whether the weather brings further hail, squalls or localized damage, and whether district authorities publish formal damage or safety advisories. Road safety on national highways and the risk of additional power cuts remain the main short-term stakes.
Officials and residents across Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh are now watching for any extension or upgrade of alerts, along with updated damage tallies from roads, electricity infrastructure and local administrations.
