Chicago-area forecasters say another round of evening storms could bring damaging winds, hail and possibly a brief tornado risk, with a blowing dust advisory also in effect. The National Weather Service has already warned of locally severe storms near and north of Interstate 80.

Chicago-area residents are being told to prepare for another round of stormy weather this evening, with the National Weather Service warning that damaging winds and hail are the main risks.

NWS Chicago says scattered thunderstorms may develop this evening, especially near and north of Interstate 80. The agency’s hazardous weather outlook says storms could produce locally damaging winds up to 65 mph and large hail up to 1 inch.

A Blowing Dust Advisory is also in effect for parts of northeastern Illinois and northwest Indiana through 6 p.m. CDT, with visibility potentially dropping to one quarter mile in some areas.

Local forecasts have been consistent on the threat. NBC Chicago said storms could arrive after about 6 p.m. and continue into the evening, while FOX 32 Chicago said strong to severe storms are possible tonight, with gusty wind, hail and a small tornado risk southeast of I-80.

NBC Chicago also reported that a severe thunderstorm warning was already in effect for part of the Chicago area at the time of publication. The main question now is how widespread the storm line becomes and whether any warnings expand later in the evening.
