The Supreme Court has pushed to July a hearing on a petition challenging the cancellation and reconduct of NEET-UG 2026, leaving the June 21 re-test on track for now.
The Supreme Court has deferred to July a petition challenging the National Testing Agency’s decision to cancel and reconduct NEET-UG 2026, keeping the June 21 re-examination in place for now.
The case centers on the NTA’s move after controversy over the exam, which has affected nearly 22 lakh candidates, according to the petition. The court’s delay means the legal challenge will not be heard immediately, even as candidates continue preparing for the re-test.
What the court delayed
Reporting on June 17 said the Supreme Court pushed the hearing into July. The petition questions the nationwide cancellation and reconduct of the exam, which is India’s undergraduate medical entrance test.
On June 1, the court had already declined a separate plea to hold the re-test in computer-based test mode, showing that the broader dispute had been moving through the legal system before this latest deferment.
June 21 re-test still on schedule
For now, the re-examination remains scheduled for June 21, 2026. Separate reporting on June 18 said the NTA continued issuing exam-day instructions and logistics updates, including easier admit-card access ahead of the test.
The agency has also publicly sought to reassure candidates about the conduct of the re-exam and opened a mental health helpline, according to the reporting.
What happens next
The main unresolved issue is whether the Supreme Court will alter the NTA’s cancellation-and-retest plan when it takes up the petition in July. Until then, the immediate focus remains on whether the June 21 re-examination proceeds as planned.
