Overnight thunderstorms left more than 17,000 CPS Energy customers without power in the San Antonio area Saturday morning, with flooded roads slowing repairs and more rain possible later in the day.

Overnight thunderstorms knocked out power for more than 17,000 CPS Energy customers in the San Antonio area on Saturday morning, with flooding slowing restoration work in some neighborhoods.

According to mySanAntonio, CPS Energy’s outage map showed 17,126 customers without power and 370 active outages at 7:53 a.m. Saturday. More than 12,300 of the affected customers were in San Antonio, with additional outages reported in Bulverde and Castroville.

Restoration work underway

CPS Energy crews were responding to the outages as the utility focused first on public-safety hazards and the largest outages. The reporting said flooded roads and other hazardous conditions were making it harder for crews to reach some repair sites.

The outage was part of a broader weather pattern affecting the region. The National Weather Service was forecasting more showers and thunderstorms later Saturday, with additional rain possible Sunday.

Temperatures were also expected to climb into the mid-90s, with heat index values as high as 105 degrees, increasing the impact of any prolonged outage.

What remains unclear

CPS Energy had not yet given a full restoration timeline for the hardest-hit areas. The key unknown Saturday morning was how quickly the outage total would fall as crews worked through flooded and difficult-to-access locations.
