Rain and thunderstorms are expected across the Cincinnati area on Sunday, with the National Weather Service warning of locally heavy rainfall and active flood warnings on the Little Miami and Great Miami rivers.

Rain is expected to remain a factor across the Cincinnati area on Sunday as forecasters warn of off-and-on showers, isolated thunderstorms and the chance of locally heavy rainfall.

The National Weather Service in Wilmington said early Sunday that more showers and some thunderstorms were expected during the day. The agency said some of the rain could fall heavily at times.

Local forecast coverage echoed that trend. WCPO said showers and isolated storms would continue through the afternoon, while WLWT said Sunday plans would feature rain off and on through the afternoon and evening.

The weather matters because flood warnings remained active for two area rivers. The Little Miami River at Spring Valley and the Great Miami River at Miamitown were both under flood warnings on Sunday.

An earlier FOX19 forecast on May 21 had suggested Sunday and Monday would be drier, but later updates pointed to a wetter Sunday and a better chance for improvement by Memorial Day.

Forecasters said Monday should trend drier, though some showers could still linger.
