Later in the day, Frances Tiafoe survived a much tighter battle. The ATP said Tiafoe saved one match point before beating Alexei Popyrin 3-6, 6-5, 7-6(6) to advance.
The two results made for a notable quarterfinal day in Houston, with Tirante recording one of the biggest wins of his career and Tiafoe escaping elimination late. The ATP said Tirante's victory was his second top-10 win.
