Tommy Paul beat Frances Tiafoe in a rain-interrupted Houston semifinal and reached his first ATP clay-court final, according to ATP Tour reporting.
Tommy Paul beat Frances Tiafoe in a rain-interrupted Houston semifinal on April 4 and reached his first ATP Tour clay-court final.
The ATP Tour reported the score as 7-5, 4-6, 7-6(7). The match was paused by rain for about 90 minutes during the second set before Paul closed it out.
The win sends Paul into Sunday’s final against Roman Andres Burruchaga.
It is a milestone result for Paul on clay, where he had not previously reached an ATP Tour final on the surface. Houston coverage and other reports independently confirmed the result, the rain delay and the final matchup.
Paul’s victory also ended Tiafoe’s run in the Houston event after a tightly contested semifinal that went to a final-set tiebreak.
