The National Weather Service in St. Louis issued a tornado warning Sunday for southern Bond County and east-central Madison County in Illinois after radar showed rotation near Highland.

The warning was in effect until 3:30 p.m. CDT on June 21, 2026. At 2:54 p.m. CDT, a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado was located near Highland and moving east at 40 mph.

Communities in the warning

The warned area included Highland, Grantfork, Pierron, Pocahontas, Dudleyville, Beaver Creek, Greenville, Tamalco, Keyesport and Pleasant Mound. Interstate 70 between exits 30 and 45 was also included.

The National Weather Service said flying debris was dangerous and warned that damage to mobile homes, roofs, windows, vehicles and trees was likely.

Safety guidance

Residents in the warning area were advised to seek shelter immediately in a basement or an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building and stay away from windows.

The warning later expired.
