Heavy rain from a tropical system flooded streets and forced road closures across Brazoria County, with Freeport police warning drivers not to move barricades or try to bypass closures.
Torrential rain from a tropical system flooded streets and forced road closures across Brazoria County on Wednesday, prompting Freeport police to close several roadways and warn residents not to drive around barricades.
The flooding came as the National Weather Service kept a flood warning in effect until 10:45 a.m. Wednesday and a flood watch in place until 7 p.m. Heavy rain had already produced about 5 to 7 inches of rainfall in some parts of the county by around 8:30 a.m., according to local coverage.
Flooding and closures
Freeport police said several roads in the city were closed because of flooding. Barricades were set up in affected areas, and residents were told not to move them or try to go around them.
Coverage also said flooding and road issues affected other Brazoria County cities, including Lake Jackson, Angleton and Clute.
Broader weather threat
The rain was part of a larger tropical disturbance along the upper Texas Gulf Coast that was expected to keep producing heavy rain across Southeast Texas through Wednesday. Nearby creeks and bayous were also facing rising water risks as the system moved through the region.
Officials and forecasters still needed to monitor whether heavier rain bands would add to flooding later in the day, and whether additional road closures or reopenings would follow as conditions changed.
