Heavy rain from Potential Tropical Cyclone One caused street flooding and road closures in Brazoria County on Wednesday morning, with flood warnings and watches in effect and officials urging drivers to avoid barricaded roads.
Brazoria County cities saw street flooding and road closures Wednesday morning as torrential rain from a tropical system continued to pound the Upper Texas coast.
The affected communities included Freeport, Lake Jackson, Angleton and Clute, where water began covering streets and officials reported multiple barricaded roadways. Freeport police said several roads were closed and warned residents not to drive around barriers or move them.
The National Weather Service had a flood warning in effect until 10:45 a.m. Wednesday and a flood watch in effect until 7 p.m. By about 8:30 a.m., reports in the area said 5 to 7 inches of rain had already fallen.
Flooding and closures
The flooding developed as rain bands from Potential Tropical Cyclone One lingered over coastal Brazoria County. That kept the risk of dangerous street flooding and travel disruptions high through the morning.
Local officials urged drivers to stay away from flooded roads and respect barricades. The warning was aimed not only at motorists, but also at keeping emergency responders from having to enter dangerous water-covered streets.
Storm threat continues
The broader Southeast Texas flood threat remained elevated through Wednesday afternoon, according to Houston Chronicle forecast coverage. Brazoria County stayed within the area most exposed to repeated rounds of rain as the system moved along the coast.
It was not immediately clear whether the flood warning or flood watch would be extended later in the day, or whether additional rainfall would worsen conditions in the county.
Officials were also still assessing whether the flooding caused any rescues, property damage or evacuations beyond the road closures already reported.
