TxDOT plans to replace the Loop 289 bridges over Slide Road in Lubbock with a single new bridge built in the existing footprint. A public comment window opens June 18 and runs through July 13.
Texas Department of Transportation plans to replace the Loop 289 bridges over Slide Road in Lubbock, one of the city’s busier highway crossings, after determining the structures have reached the end of their usable life.
The project would replace the existing bridge structures with a single new bridge built within the current Loop 289 footprint. TxDOT says it does not plan to add travel lanes or move ramps as part of the work.
Public comment window opens June 18
TxDOT is opening a virtual public meeting on June 18 at 4 p.m. The online meeting will remain available through July 13, giving the public time to review the proposal and submit comments.
The agency is also hosting an in-person open house on June 18 from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the TxDOT Lubbock District Headquarters Training Center.
The project comes as Loop 289 remains a major traffic route in Lubbock and Slide Road serves as a key commercial corridor.
What the project could mean for drivers
TxDOT says construction will eventually require detours and temporary closures. The agency has not yet released a final construction schedule or detailed traffic-control plan.
For motorists, shoppers and businesses along Slide Road, the replacement could mean lane changes and other disruptions once work begins, even though the project is framed as a replacement rather than an expansion.
What happens next
The public comment period runs through July 13. After that, TxDOT is expected to move forward with further project planning and schedule details.
For now, the agency is asking the public to review the proposal and weigh in before the project advances.
