Home plate umpire C.B. Bucknor left the Rays-Brewers game on Wednesday after a foul tip struck his face mask in the second inning.
The pitch was a 100-mph fastball from Brewers pitcher Jacob Misiorowski to Rays catcher Nick Fortes. After the ball hit Bucknor's mask, he immediately went to his knees and was checked by Brewers catcher William Contreras and team trainers.
Bucknor was helped off the field and replaced behind the plate by Chad Fairchild. The game was delayed for about 13 minutes while the crew dealt with the injury.
The incident briefly reduced the officiating crew to three umpires. The game later continued and ended with Milwaukee beating Tampa Bay 6-2.
No additional information was immediately available Wednesday about whether Bucknor suffered any lasting injury or would miss future assignments.
