Wegovy weight-loss pill approved in UK

UK regulators have approved a Wegovy tablet, opening a new oral version of Novo Nordisk's obesity treatment in the UK.

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency cleared the once-daily pill on June 11, 2026, according to reporting that cited the regulator. The tablet contains semaglutide, the same active ingredient used in Wegovy's injection, and is approved for adults with obesity and for overweight adults who have at least one weight-related health condition.

Private availability is expected within weeks. NHS use has not yet been assessed.

What the approval means

Wegovy is already sold as a weekly injection, but the tablet gives patients a non-injectable option in a market where oral GLP-1 drugs have drawn heavy interest.

MHRA executive director of healthcare quality and access Julian Beach said the tablet met the regulator's standards for safety, quality and effectiveness, according to coverage.

The approval also adds momentum to a fast-growing category of oral obesity treatments. Clinical-trial results cited in reporting showed weight loss of about 14% to 17% over 64 weeks, depending on how adherence was counted.

Private launch first

The strongest consistent reporting suggests the pill will be sold privately first, with pharmacies expecting demand to be high. Some coverage said it could arrive within days or weeks, but the most cautious verified timing is that it should be available within weeks.

Pricing has not been publicly confirmed, and there is no NHS rollout yet.

What comes next

The main unresolved questions are whether Novo Nordisk will announce a UK price and launch date, whether NICE or NHS England will consider the tablet for public use, and whether there will be any prescribing or supply limits at launch.

For now, the approval gives UK patients a new route into Wegovy treatment and puts additional pressure on the oral GLP-1 market.
